North Winchester

Nestled in the foothills of Winchester, this Georgian listed property lacked the oppulance befitting of its setting. Much of the garden was neglected, tired and poorly conceived. The garden lacked a journey, theatre and immersion and was crying out for a much needed renovation.

The planting and layout was tired and dysfunctional, as was the formal lawn which was largely worn and sparse. The formal gardens lacked direction and sense of theatre. Much of the planting was heavily reliant on irrigation, lacking sustainability or forward thinking in practice. A whole host of planting was in poor health, unsuitable for the soil type, site and situation.

We set about renovating the formal lawns, refreshing the borders, injecting a plethora of native species and in doing so creating a haven not only for the our clients but for the abundance of wildlife that now entertain the space.

We actively engaged with the clients to ensure the outdoor spaces were as sustainable and forward thinking as possible, ousting the irrigation and fussy approaches to the garden in favour of a more organic, naturalised permaculture approach. The main lawn area was reseeded. Other lawn areas were turned to border and all borders planted with species more tolerant of drought and deluges to cope with our increasingly erratic climate and to increase biodiversity. Ground water and collection tanks were also installed to relieve dependency on mains water. Working areas have been cleverly concealed and camouflaged to allow green waste to be stored and repurposed back into the garden, saving the client money and providing a rich humic organic matter.
